Our team holds those in authority to account by providing effective advice and representation to individuals and organisations, and through litigation in statutory appeals from the Tribunal level up to and including the Supreme Court and ECtHR, and via judicial review.
We have a vacancy for a legal assistant to provide support to our busy fee earners. The position is a new role and will require work on site but is suitable for anyone who is considering a career in law, whether they have already embarked on their legal training or have not yet started the process. It will be desirable for a candidate to have already achieved the Law Society Level 2 IAAS accreditation required to provide legally aided representation in immigration work but is not essential. The firm has traditionally had a commitment to training lawyers, and subject to exceptional performance and commitment the role could lead to support by us to accreditation under the IAAS Scheme, or to count in part or in full towards qualifying work experience under the new SRA SQE regime.
The successful candidate will need to establish a strong interest and desire to work in the field of human rights law, with exceptional organisational and team support skills.
The role has been developed with the new SRA route to qualifying in mind, to offer a real opportunity for an ambitious and hardworking individual to embark on a legal career, learning every aspect of the business, potentially acquiring not only legal skills required to become a solicitor but also vital skills in the management of a successful legal practice.
The legal assistant will be closely supervised and trained by the partners.
The role will be adapted and weighted to suit the particular skills, level of know-how and knowledge, as well as qualification of the successful candidate but will potentially include 3 levels of work:
- General administrative support in running the office (i.e. stationery ordering/ dealing with tradespersons attending the office)
- Copying, scanning, faxing
- Dealing with outsourced suppliers on behalf of the team (Receptionist, IT, Case management)
- Distributing post
- Archiving, file retrieval and processing files for destruction
- Accounts (data entering)
- Picking up a pint of milk for the office!
- Opening files on the case management system
- Setting up client meetings
- Printing off template letters / drafting
- Legal Research
- Updating the case management system
- Compliance with the office manual
- Advising and assisting clients
- Making legal aid applications/ billing
Working alongside the current practice manager in key aspects of the business with particular emphasis on the smooth running of the business.
